Dr. James B. Hamilton was a faculty member in chemistry and Assistant Provost at Michigan State University. Dr. Hamilton was one of the earliest proponents of Trio and EOP programs developing research and data to support the programs and services provided to low-income and first-generation students.
The James B. Hamilton Research Scholars Award was created to honor Dr. Hamilton and the contributions he made to students, the Michigan Chapter of MAEOPP and MAEOPP.
The James B. Hamilton Scholarship Fund provides support for the James B. Hamilton Research Scholars Award. The award supports research projects that are consistent with the goals and purposes of MAEOPP. Initial financial support for the fund was provided by the Michigan Chapter of MAEOPP. Dr. Ruth Hamilton continues to support the fund. |
Do you want to assist high achieving low-income and first generation college
students obtain a college degree? Click here
for the MEF Contribution Form. We are perhaps the only scholarship
foundation of its kind serving low-income, first
generation and Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students.
We serve the largest number (over 200,000)
and the most diverse group of middle-school, high school
and college students. Most of our
students are participants in TRIO, federally-funded
programs that specifically target low-income,
first-generation and disabled students.
From 1996 to 2003, a total of 212 MEF Family of scholarships and awards
have been given to
low-income, first-generation, disabled and Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students. The number of scholarships and
awards given, by year and scholarship and award type, is summarized below.
For 2005-06, we have added a new scholarship, the
Illinois Scholarship Program (ISP), funded
initially by the Grand Victoria Foundation, Chicago,
Illinois. This new scholarship will provide 10,
$2,000 scholarships for students in the Chicago
area. MEF is currently seeking support from other
potential funders to increase the funding and scope of
ISP.
