In December 2004, the MAEOPP Education Foundation (MEF) Board
submitted a proposal for scholarship funding to the Grand
Victorian Foundation.
The proposal requested one year grant funding to
provide scholarships for students in several counties in
the Chicago
area. In
March 2005, Ms Nancy Fishman, Executive Director, Grand
Victoria Foundation, notified MEF that it has been awarded
$30,000 in funding for the year 2005-06 year.
These monetary resources will allow MEF to almost
double its scholarship support, from $21,000 in 2004-05, to
$41,000.00 in 2005-06.
The new scholarship program, the Illinois
Scholarship Program (ISP), will support ten (10) new
$2,000 scholarships for deserving students in the
Chicago
area (See the graphic
below).

While
initial support for ISP will be provided by the Grand
Victoria Foundation, MEF is pursuing funds from other
sources as well, with the intention that ISP will be a
permanent scholarship program in the state Illinois.
We also hope to duplicate this effort in all ten
states served by MEF. If you have ideas, or would
like to help, please contact us.
ISP will allow MEF to increase its
scholarship support for high achieving, financially
deserving, low income and first generation students.
The following project goals will be accomplished by year
end.
1)
To increase the opportunity for low-income and
first generation new freshmen to obtain access to higher
education and adequate financial aid;
2)
To increase access to financial assistance and the chance
that currently-enrolled low-income and first generation
college students will obtain a 4-year college degree;
3)
To increase students’ career and leadership
development opportunities;
4)
To increase students’ level of understanding and
participation in community service activities; and
5)
To increase awareness by the general public
regarding the academic and community service
accomplishments of the scholarship recipients and to
increase student self-esteem.
The project has three components: a)
a scholarship support component during which students’
academic progress will be monitored; b) a community service
component, which requires that students look outward at
the world about them and make a real contribution to
improve on what they see; and c) a career and leadership
development component in which students will have the
opportunity to teach and learn from each other, and from
professional staff. The grant also provides funds
for administrative systems and for student tracking.
Eligible students are nominated by their program directors
in the target area.
The MAEOPP Education Foundation has
twelve years of experience in managing a scholarship
foundation. Since
1996 we have provided $177,000 in scholarships to needy
students. And
we do so with all volunteers.
The ISP Program will continue a tradition of
providing assistance to deserving students who
historically have not had access to higher education.
