Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides enhanced preparation for courses which many students are required to take. This instruction is done in small groups and, as with tutorials, these groups meet for one regularly scheduled hour each week. However, unlike tutors, SI leaders attend lectures, take class notes, and do the required reading for the course. The SI leader helps students acquire critical thinking skills and study skills that are appropriate and effective for the particular course and subject area. In the past, SI has been provided for Economics 102 and 103, Chemistry 101, and Psychology 100 and Sociology 100. Offerings for SI may change from year to year. Students who regularly attend SI usually receive a final course grade that is 0.5 to 1 grade point higher than non-attendees.
