What is a Typical Tutoring Session Like?

Tutoring is a proactive activity. It is designed to facilitate the transition from high school to college. The tutor's main responsibility is to prompt the student to utilize his/her critical thinking skills. The most constructive tutoring sessions are the ones in which the student comes prepared, having read the week's reading assignment, listened to the lecture, and reviewed his/her notes. Tutoring is not a passive process. It requires that the student be fully engaged and ready to take an active role in his/her education.

In the typical tutoring session, the tutor will ask if the student has any questions about the week's material. The student is the one who sets the agenda for the tutoring session and is expected to present any questions or concerns he/she may have about the week's material. The tutor then helps to clarify any concepts, ideas, or information the student may not understand.
